Open licensing: cars, cartography, content and cola

The idea of the digital commons is proving disruptive to many industries. Each has its own quirks and foibles. Andrew Katz, a lawyer specializing in open source software, who also advises on other 'opens', investigates the interplay between licensing and community in a number of non-software open projects. In particular, he has been advising the 40Fires foundation on licensing issues arising out of its development of an open source hydrogen/fuel cell car.

Andrew Katz is a partner at Moorcrofts LLP, a boutique law firm in England's Thames Valley. He advises a wide range of businesses on free and open source related issues. He has lectured and published widely on the subject and is a founder editor of the International Free and Open Source Software Law Review. Before requalifying as a solicitor, he qualified as a barrister, and moonlighted as a programmer during his studies at Bar School. He has released software under the GPL, and has designed and built computer hardware. He is increasingly involved in open hardware projects, including the Hyrban bydrogen car.
