Seats for these sessions are extremely limited so please be sure to register now. Each session costs just £400 (with a £75 charge for the required Arduino hardware for the "Intro to Arduino" session).

Mon 05 Free and Open Source Software Licensing and Exploitation Models
Rowan Wilson
Research Officer
University of Oxford

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) has rapidly developed from a fringe phenomenon into a core component of nearly every modern IT system. Yet understanding of the licences that underpin the software and the exploitation opportunities they offer is still surprisingly low in both the business and academic communities. This one day training session will provide you with the skills to understand the way that FOSS licensing works and how businesses and projects can leverage FOSS to sustain hemselves and their business activities.

Learn about managing your project by exploring the life of openoffice.org

In this training, we will explore the many recent changes in the openoffice.org project, and will use these to unpack the many issues and questions that face us when we attempt to open source a project: copyright, ownership, permissive vs copy-left, trademarks, patents, and more.

Participants are encouraged to bring ideas of their own projects or governance issues to explore the topics of this training.

It is used by people who don't know anything about electronics who just want to get stuff done, as well as seasoned embedded electronic engineers who enjoy the simplicity and speed of development it offers for many tasks. It is the basis of the reference design for the recently announced Android ADK.

Tue 06 Developing Open Source Communities for Fun and Profit
Stephen Walli
Technical Director
Outercurve Foundation

Open source software is a way to license software such that anyone can inspect, use, and redevelop it.  The real benefits come from the collaborative development communities that can grow around such software projects. Developing such communities is a challenge.  Without organization, the community will not thrive.  Organizing "volunteers" and all the models around "herding cats" requires thought and understanding. If driven from a for profit company, the business can get too involved in all the wrong ways.
